I plan on ordering seeds from you in the spring, but wanted to ask you if you could recommend a bush cantaloupe, watermelon & winter squash.
Replied on: 10:44am 09-15-2014

I do no know of good bush varieties of canteloupe or watermelon, but Minnesota Midget Canteloupe and Sugar Baby Watermelon are smaller easier to control varieties. they can even be trellised. As far as winter squash, most are vining, and small fruited ones again can be trellised. Acorn squash Table Queen is an excellent bush variety though.

web search (probably for Portuguese kale)

What kind of seeds are you interested in?(perennials, tomatoes, etc.)

novelties
I'm loving my Portuguese kale . Russian Red kale is still my favorite brassica, but the Portuguese kale has won a place in my garden because I love the way it grows--huge, spreading, cabbage-like leaves that stay flat & just keep coming.

I did want to ask your advice on greasy beans. My husband said he doesn't like the hairs on regular green beans, so greasies sound like they'd be up his alley, but I'm not sure which variety would do well up here (northern zone 4, Wisconsin). Are there any you'd recommend for northern gardening?

Thanks!

So glad to hear about the kale!
For the beans, anything that I say grows well for me should do well for you. I normally start my beans in 2" started size pots outside on a rack when the days are above 50 at night. Then when they have a few leaves, I transplant into the garden, by then the ground is usually warmer. But my friend who is a bean expert and lives in WI says he has been successful with seeding direct into the ground in late June and still got a good crop. That might be late for saving seeds though. If you do save seeds, beans that are completely mature and drying on the vine can hand light frosts. The pods act like jackets, but for really cold, I would either pull the vines or cover them. Most beans I've grown come in a lot sooner than the frost though. Hope that helps, Remy

Hi Remy, Sheila from Kentucky here. Just wanted to let you know how wonderful my Stump of the World and Remy Rouge are doing. The Stumps are reaching for the top of the five foot cages. The Remy's are loaded. Only error is that I forgot Remy Rouge were a cherry oops. Have five beautiful plants in a row. I'm sure we won't have any problem getting rid of them. Hope you are having a great gardening season.

Hi Sheila! That's so wonderful to hear. You are going to love those tomatoes. Too funny about all the cherries. Once people taste the Remy Rouges though they will disappear fast. Don't let too many people taste the Stumps. They won't leave you alone after, lol.
Everything is going good here. Knock on wood it stays that way!

Making a list of "likes" for next year's planting. I love, love the color of Green Envy zinnia. You noted on website that it was by a customers request. Please be sure and include these seeds again for 2015! Thank you.

Remy, I'm sorry I didn't find your site before I made my seed orders, but look forward to ordering from you for next year. When is the best time -- i.e. when will you likely have everything listed?

Btw, a note about Tronchuda. This plant is much less cold tolerant than other brassicas. When the broccoli is merely a bit bluish and still quite harvestable, the tronchuda is frozen and soggy and limp and ruined. I found this out the hard way, of course! This year I'll harvest it all much earlier. It's a great vegetable -- it doesn't have that bitter edge many brassicas get when grown under sub-optimal conditions.

Thank you for your note!
The major vegetable update happens on Nov. 15th. All the tomatoes, beans, peppers, etc. that I've grown for the year are always for sale then. I do do a few add-ons through the winter as friends who are farmers send me things, and sometimes I see something wholesale that I have to get! If you are a bean person, that is the most important thing to order early as no matter how much I grow, I run out fast of many varieties. There's a lot of regulars that have Nov. 15th marked on their calendars, lol.
Thanks for the Tronchuda info, when I update the page, I'll add that in.

Hi Rachel,
I do not give out free samples. Sample refers to the small size packets which are perfect for the home gardener.
My friend Trudi at http://www.WinterSown.org provides seeds for groups such are yours.
Because of the amount of requests I get, I only send contributions to local WNY groups.

Remy, I haven't had any luck yet getting my Caucasian Spinach to germinate, so I took another look at your write-up and you say it needs cold stratification or wintersowing. (Oops!) Does this mean I need to freeze the seeds before trying to germinate? If so, for how long would you recommend freezing them? Thanks.
Replied on: 12:59pm 03-11-2014

From what I've read since writing my description, it seems people have very good luck with 3-4 weeks in the fridge, not freezer, so put the pot in a baggie so it stays moist the fridge for awhile.

Just wondering why you do not ship Pamphass Grass to California? Probably spelled that wrong, but hopefully you get it. Nice selection and god prices.
Replied on: 10:38pm 03-09-2014

Hi Dawn, Pampas grass is prohibited by California to ship there. It is considered an invasive species there. Any company that does ship it there is breaking the law.

perennial ground cover - candy tuff, ice plant philox, blue fescue, etc
I have a very steep slope (mostly sunny) that is 5' x 55' but in one area 15' x 11.' I'm looking for ground cover that does not require a lot of work to take care of. The slope is dry, although I can water, and grass will not grow on it. I do like your blue fescue and hope to use it at the top of the wider slope (15' x 11') and maybe along the middle of the rest of the area (5'x55'). Any suggestions?

Hi Frank,
You forgot one important detail, what zone you are in. I'm going to respond with things that will do well in zone 5 or 6 with those conditions. Some may be a couple feet tall in bloom, but no larger, and I will include them in case you want a few items that are not too short. Things to look for in descriptions to know they might work are western native, silvery foliage, alpine garden plant, needs well drained soil, and of course drought resistant.
Ornamental Agastaches
Antennaria dioica ‘Rubra‘
Armeria maritima
Aster tongolensis ‘Wartburg Star’
Balsamorhiza sagittata
Callirhoe involucrata
Catananche caerulea
Cerastium tomentosum
Coreopsis
Dianthus
Eryngium alpinum ‘Superbum’
Gaillardia
Lychnis alpina (Arctic Campion)
Lychnis chalcedonica ‘Burning Love’
Mirabilis multiflora
Papaver nudicaule Mix (Iceland Poppy)
Penstemon strictus
Sedums
Sisyrinchium bellum (Blue Eyed Grass)
Stachys monieri
Hope that helps,

Hi
Paypal is beyond a pain in the butt!! I am a Canadian with a Canadian Master Card (of course) but I am in ARIZONA and want my seeds shipped here. But there's no way I can do that with paypal they want my billing address! Now I'm going to have to send you a letter with what I want. I really like your selections though I noticed that a few items you listed as zone 4 or 5 do really well in my zone 3 garden!
Cheers for now

Hi Lee,
I know PayPal can be a pain sometimes. You can order with PayPal and send me a message about where you want it shipped though. That is not a problem.
Let me know about some of the times growing in you Z3 garden. I can use that info to let people know they may be successful. Thanks!

Friend Peggy Wilson, your customer

What kind of seeds are you interested in?(perennials, tomatoes, etc.)

beans
I have been searching for a bean that my great-aunt used to cook--we just called them "gray butterbeans", but I've never known the real name. They were totally gray when cooked (never saw them on the vine) and about 3/4" long. I know that she raised her own vegetables, so it's probably an older variety--that would have been pre-1970's. No one I've spoken to has ever heard of it. Can you help? My friend, Peggy Wilson, highly recommends you! Thanks....
Replied on: 10:52pm 01-23-2014

Hi Pamela, I wish I knew which variety. Butterbeans are small limas, often colorful, and when cooked can turn gray. I do not know a variety by that name though. It may not of really been the name even. If you knew what they looked like before they were cooked, it would help a lot as there are quite a few varieties out there.
I do sell a few, you could always experiment and find one that reminds you of the flavor.
