Question
When are you updating your tomato list for 2013? Several of the varieties I want are out of stock for 2012
Replied on: 10:47am 09-13-2012

Hi Jim,
I will keep an eye out for Merlot.
The tomatoes will be updated around Nov. 15th. I had this posted on the tomato page, but I have made it bigger since you are not the only person who did not see it .

COMFREY, esp Bocking 14 variety roots
Me again! Remy, I did think of one thing that I have been looking EVERYWHERE for - COMFREY seeds and especially the roots of the comfrey variety "Bocking 14".

Comfrey leaves are reputed to be an amazing organic fertilizer when allowed to decompose in water. The standard species self seeds readily (so tricky to contain in urban gardens) but the Bocking 14 does not do this. Which is why the roots are sold and not seeds. It's apparently a hot commodity up here - can't buy it anywhere at any price...desperate to get some for spring!!!!
Replied on: 5:43pm 09-10-2012

Hi again Joelle,
I have a low growing comfrey with white flowers.I do not know the name. It has never reseeded. The clump has slowly grown in the corner of the veggie garden since I planted it.
So since I have that I will not be getting the Bocking 14. If you want a piece of the variety I have though remind me in the spring, and we'll work something out.

I was very impressed with it all!
CAN'T SAY ENOUGH GOOD THINGS!!! Everything I planted germinated with great success, grew beautifully and was impressive! From the lobelia to the cannas, to the veggies, tomatos, just FANTASTIC! Loved the sample seeds which were included. Needless to say, I'm a loyal fan and will be back again and again. Spreading the word here in Canada!

a combo variety pack of a vegetable assortment of seeds. i.e. tomato, bean, cucumber, etc.
Would it be possible for you to make a combo pack of veggie seeds and a combo pack of flower seeds? Not that people get to pick their own. You pick the packs. Just one veggie garden and one flower pack. Your prices are so great hopefully people do not get picky with you. I have generally found that gardeners and flower people are pretty reasonable people.

Hi Mary,
Glad your garden club mentioned the site.
You are correct most gardeners are wonderful people!
As far as combo packs go, most seed companies that do that offer a cheaper price for the purchase of the multiple packets. Since my prices are already low, I can't offer a better deal.
I do have some mixed seed packets like the Heirloom Tomato Mix, Cherry Tomato Mix, Summer Squash Mix, Bell Pepper Mix, etc.

a few disease tolerant hybrids?
Good mornin' Remy. I have enjoyed chatting with you previously by phone & on a blog site. My heirlooms (8 types) were devastated by viral diseases mostly TYLCV & TSW. They were coping with early blight till the virus' hit. I had hoped tough guys like Neptune, Porter, Santorini, Pearson, Mule Team, Creole & Mort. Lifter could make it. I got nanda from a garden that once supplied the neighborhood!
It seems bred in resistance is the only answer. Spraying for vectors is ineffective & I really don't want to get into a lot of toxic sprays.
The reflective mulch is a possibility but for now I am pleading the case for Southern Gardeners that need a tough disease resitant beefsteak that can take the climate. The lady from Tampa below may encounter the same viral issues because Florida is a hot-bed for them. I have noted that you relented this year & added at least one hybrid. Why not select one that meets your ethical standards & has the multiple viral resistance?
I have found a corp. that claims to breed hybrids (not gen. altered) that are resistant to these plagues. Check out Asahi Ind. & Animo tomatoes. The corp has a few enviro friendly features like a few organic products & a shift in the type fuels they use (away from heavy oil). I am totally charmed by your photo & the sweet nature you exude in your communications but I was seduced by the romance of heirlooms last winter! I want something to actually come from the garden next year! Good work however you choose to run your business.

Hi Mike,
So sorry to hear about the viruses taking down your tomato plants. It is very sad.
I did check out the Asahi company and their tomatoes. I could find no mention of those tomatoes elsewhere though.
Often the problem with many of the hybrids is they either sell only in large lots and/or the cost is super expensive. Other than Sungold, my hybrids do not sell very well. Sungold is expensive, but at least I know I will recoup what I spent. I promise to keep an eye out for tomatoes that are TYLCV and TSW resistant and within a reasonable price range.
Thank you for your comments, and I hope your next tomato growing experience is much better.

Our daughter Diane Allison who lives in Arkansas told us about you

What kind of seeds are you interested in?(perennials, tomatoes, etc.)

We live in Tampa. We would like to grow tomatoes and perennials.
What do you have that would be good for the Tampa area?
Replied on: 9:09pm 08-05-2012

Hi Rosalie,
You have a good daughter!
Well in Tampa, any tomato would be good.
As far as perennials, many items actually listed on the Annuals Pages are actually perennials in your area. You seem to be on the edge of zone9/zone 10. Zone 9 would get an occasional hard freeze where zone 10 would only get a light frost. So you would know your home best as to what happens there.
Some plants listed on the Perennials pages will also do well like Agastaches, but some can not handle the long heat of FL, so it is best to do a little investigating before hand. Dave's Garden PlantFiles is good for searching because people leave zip code reports. Example if you look at Agastache 'Apache Sunset' http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/89604/
You will see people in TX and the Carolinas growing it so chances are it will do well where you are.
If you look at Campanula poscharskyana http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/366/ all the people growing it seem to be from the northern half of the country so chances are lower that it would do well for you.
Hope that helps some,
Remy

On the home page you have some seeds sprouting in little jars or bottles (April 26, 2010.) These are unfamiliar to me maybe because I live in the edge of nowhere in Missouri and civilization has not reached here yet. I would love to know what they are.
Replied on: 9:48pm 07-23-2012

Hi Elda,
Lol, civilization will get there one day
This is a technique called winter sowing. There are many variations of this. I use 2 liter pop bottles. Each pic shows one type of see that has really sprouted. It is an excellent method for seed germination.I really need to get a tutorial done for this site before time comes to do this.
In the mean time, you can visit http://www.wintersown.org/
for more info.
Hope this helps,
Glad you found the site,

Nobody else has Persian violet seeds. Nobody up here (at Lowe's ) knows what a Persian violet is! Thank you!
I live in East Texas and I am in zone 8A. The sun is brutal here and the only things that can stand direct sun are periwinkles and the multicolored lantana. All my other plants are in shade. So I would love it if you recommended plants that grow in high heat and humidity. Houston is humid subtropical and I am 140 miles N of Houston. I have a sago palm and hibiscus that are doing well. You can grow tropical plants here if you protect them in the winter.

Glad you found us! I'm surprised about the Persian Violet, but I know things vary so much around the country.
As far as plants good for where you live, much of the Annual section are excellent for you, and many would actually be perennials where you are.

I was looking for Tromboncino seeds, you came up on google. I researched you on some other sites and decided to order. Incredibly fast service, infact you've left me with a dilemna. I got the seeds for next year--they were so hard to find--now that I have them, I'm tempted to try a few right now.

Thanks for the fast service--and the bonus! I'm excited to plant tomorrow.
